What is Remedial Massage?
Massage is one of the oldest healing traditions of all time and is still used to this day to relieve muscle tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, as well as helping clear lactic acid and other waste from muscles and joints.
Massage therapists use long, smooth strokes, kneading and other movements focused on superficial layers of muscle using massage oil or lotion. These techniques improve circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues and encourages relaxation. Massage is especially effective in treating 'vicious cycle' complaints. For instance, a tension headache is often self-sustaining because the pain makes the sufferer clench the affected muscles even harder. This, in turn, creates more pain. A thorough neck and shoulder massage can release muscle tension and break the pain cycle.
Deep relaxation
One of the immediate benefits of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones are also reduced. Studies indicate that high levels of stress hormones impair the immune system.
Different types of massage
The different types of massage used in a remedial massage may include:
◦ Therapeutic – also known as 'Western' or 'Swedish' massage – designed to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation.
◦ Remedial – to encourage healing of injured soft tissue – such as muscles, tendons and ligaments.
◦ Deep tissue – used for deep musculoskeletal problems, chronic muscular tension or injuries.
◦ Sports – a blend of techniques that aims to enhance performance and help overworked muscles to recover quickly.
What to expect in a consultation
Your first massage with a new therapist will always involve a brief history (included in your 1 hr session) to ascertain main problem areas and what you expect from your massage. From the information received your therapist will decide the most ideal therapeutic approach in order to give you the results you're looking for.
It is advised to continue treatment with the same therapist to allow the treatment plan to progress to deeper levels.
Remedial Massage is offered 7 days a week at Pure Botanicals. Please contact the clinic on 9034-0555 to make a booking.
